Northern Baja - December 2013

Day 3 - Sunday, December 29

The plan was to ride from Mike's Sky Ranch to San Felipe. Not a long day, so we decided to leave a bit later than normal - about 10am - after a good breakfast at Mike's. We took the easy way down from Mike's to Hwy 3. It's a really fun road. We waited at the highway for Rich and Rob to show up - they were lollygagging it at MSR. At the highway, we noticed Rob's chain was really loose, and convinced him to take the time to tighten it up.

Then we rode on the dirt north of the highway east towards Laguna Diablo. It started out smooth enough, but it then turns into soft sand and trophy truck whoops - as it's used in the SCORE races to keep the racers off the highway. It was rougher than I expected, and a few bailed to the highway. Kudos to the big KTM's for getting as far as they did - it was really rough. Then we had a few miles of pavement to the dirt road that heads south to Laguna Diablo. Once we reached the dry lake, it was play time.

Jose has a little shack at the southern end of the dry lake, and usually has gas (which we were counting on). Big Todd actually ran out of gas about a mile short of Jose's, and had to bum a little from one of the other bikes. We stopped for cokes, and Big Todd and I shared a $20 gallon of gas.

Then it was on the San Felipe, with a short section of more trophy truck whoops thrown in for fun. After the whoops, we hit the dump road and Rob picked up a nail, but nursed it to the El Cortez Hotel. We got cleaned up, and hit the cervezas and margaritas before dinner (and watched some football). Rob fixed his flat.

Another good day!

After we reached Hwy 3, we decided to take the dirt trails east towards Laguna Diablo instead of the highway. It's used during the SCORE Baja races to keep the vehicles off the highway, and after a while it gets pretty rough - lots of sand and whoops. When it got rough, some of the group on the big bikes jumped onto the highway.

We enjoyed some beers, watched some football, and then went next door to eat dinner. Another fairly early night, as I planned to get up early on Monday morning to watch the sun rise over the Sea of Cortez.
